Stone foundations in historic homes from 1600's to early 1900's were constructed using stone masonry, bricks and lime mortar for bonding, insulation and waterproofing.
Lime mortar has great benefits for foundation construction particularly on the interior of a foundation walls. The interior foundation is considered the negative side of the foundation while the exterior is the positive side where we would try to keep water out of the walls.
We know that ground water and different degrees of moisture will enter the wall. The trick is not to trap moisture in the wall creating mold and possibly damaging sedimentary stones or soft masonry bricks. Lime mortar is able to be breathable, flexible and yet a strong enough barrier is created to stop water infiltration.
Over time ground water and poor air quality can soften neglected lime causing the bonding agents in lime to wash out or dry up. Properly maintained lime can last for hundreds of years!
