Stone foundation repairs by Thompson Crowley Masonry are performed under close supervision of third generation owner operator.
With decades of stone foundation restoration experience we know exactly how stone walls and stone foundations were and are constructed. We know which mortars were used during colonial construction period and how they can be effectively repaired. The stone foundation construction from 1600's to early 1900's in Massachusetts involved
using lime mortar for bonding masonry together and waterproofing. Stone foundation walls were waterproofed by a series of lime coatings creating a the classic white wash finish known through Europe and seen locally in Salem, Danvers and Concord areas during first period construction. The lime mortar used had the benefit of being flexible and breathable to allow for lasting restoration.
Over time, ground water would wash out the bonding agents in lime and the foundation walls would become sandy and dry and the waterproof coating would wash off. The stone foundations would develop air pockets behind the masonry and cracks would appear resulting in leaks and wet basements.
We offer lime mortar restoration, preservation and waterproofing of all stone foundations from 1600's to early 1900's. We have completed thousands of foundation restoration and basement waterproofing projects since 1965, having had the privilege and experience of restoring and waterproofing some the first homes constructed in America.
